Bookish Mail: Recs with Kaja

Bookish Mail is my book recommendation feature utilizing postcards. Each time a reader sends me a book recommendation on a postcard, the reader and recommendation are featured on the blog along with my responding postcard and recommendation. If you’re interested in sending me a postcard to be a part of this feature, please email me to exchange mailing details and Goodreads info.

Kaja’s Recommendation

Bookish Mail: Kaja's Uprooted Rec

Hi, Asti!

I hope you’re well and that you’re enjoying springtime! I saw your post on dreading series – it’s something I can definitely relate to. I do enjoy series, usually, because I like revisiting characters I like, but it’s nice to read a good standalone sometimes. Since you’ve already read Vicious, my recommendation to you would be Uprooted by Naomi Novik! I finished it last week and it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s a bit long, perhaps, but so original and creepy and courageous. In return, I’d love a similar recommendation – a standalone fantasy, if you have a good idea. My mailing address is: BLURRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I wish you many good books and a good summer!

Of Dragons and Hearts

I was super excited when Kaja contacted me about exchanging postcards and recommendations because I’ve worked with her before and she’s such a sweet person! She created a guest post on our blog about reviewing average reads last year, and it’s crazy to think that she’s now been doing this blogging thing for over a year – congrats Kaja!

(Of course, can we take a second to notice how slow I am about posting the postcards/recs I receive? I mean, it’s sort of on purpose, I like spreading them all out so I have other content on the blog, but she actually sent this postcard to me two months ago… Whoops.)

Anyways, thank you so much for recommending me a standalone after reading my post on dreading series, Kaja! While I appreciate the recommendations I’ve already received containing series, I’m much more likely to dive into a standalone right now than dive into another series. And I’m actually really excited that you recommended Uprooted!

I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about Uprooted in the blogosphere, to the point where even if it weren’t recommended to me I would want to read it just so I can join the conversation with everyone else! I really don’t have much knowledge of what the story is actually about, but I’m craving some good fantasy and your description of it being original, creepy, and courageous has me itching to read it. (Plus, if Vicious was your alternate recommendation, I really don’t think you can do wrong. I LOVE that book.)

So yes, thank you so so much for the recommendation and the postcard, and I hope to get my hands on it soon! (The only reason I haven’t purchased it already, because I have thought about it, is because I like the UK cover over the US one and I’ve been too lazy to order online. Darn you shallowness.)
