News & Updates at Oh, the Books!

You may have guessed this was coming…

Well, hello friends! If you haven’t seen Asti’s post from Friday, go read it now (or, I guess if you don’t want to do that, FINE). Yes, that’s right. Asti has decided to stop blogging, at least through the end of the year. Her decision has basically given me leave to take a break, too.

And let me tell you why…

We all know that I recently moved to Austin due to my husband’s job. Things are finally getting settled here. I found a job, which I will be starting next week — which means I will have much less time for bookish/bloggish anything. But more importantly…

This past week, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. This coming week he will be having some scans to make sure it hasn’t spread into his lymph nodes, etc. Beyond that, we will be working with the folks at MD Anderson for treatment. This means we will be traveling back and forth to Houston — possibly even moving back there, if necessary. I have no idea what our lives will be like in the coming months, but I do know that I obviously will not have much time or energy to devote to blogging.

Basically, everything else in my life is secondary. Already, we are having to figure out a new diet for him that won’t feed the cancer, so to speak. I’m sure I will have some time for reading, etc. but so much of my spare time I want to spend with him. I’m sure you can understand!

So what is going to happen to the blog?

Here is our plan.

  • We already know that Asti won’t be blogging through December.
  • I’ve already got a handful of posts and reviews written and scheduled through the month of September (and maybe into October). I will keep my posts scheduled to go live as planned, especially since many of them are reviews for books coming out this fall.
  • Beyond that, I will not be blogging through the rest of the year.
  • Obviously this means the next Bookish Games is on hold.
  • We will not be posting any more Weekly Recaps — at least this year.

At the end of the year, Asti and I will regroup and decide what we would like to do from there. Maybe we will come back, maybe our schedules just won’t allow it. Maybe something completely new will pop up. Who knows?

That doesn’t mean we’re disappearing!

Even though we have decided to stop blogging, that doesn’t mean we are gone for good. We’ve both made so many great friends through this community and we want to keep in touch with you all! Asti and I will both definitely still be around on twitter and instagram.

As Asti said in her goodbye post — please don’t hesitate to email/DM/contact me! I might not be able to respond right away, but I will do my best. I don’t think I could just completely leave our wonderful community, so I will definitely still be a part of things, however I can.

Thanks for understanding! <3

  1. Oh Kelley, I’m so sorry for that news. That sucks. Hopefully it hasn’t metastasised yet and can be managed. I really hope the treatments can be successful.

I’ll miss reading both you and Asti’s posts but you do need to take care of yourselves first! The community will understand and support any decision you make. Take care and I hope life treats you well (or as well as it can considering the various circumstances) in the mean time.

  2. Oh, I’m so sorry Kelley, I’ll be sending all the positive thoughts and vibes I can you you both during this difficult time <3 You need to take care of your family and not worry about something silly like blogging right now. So do what you need to do. I'm always around if you need to talk <3

  3. Kelley :( My heart sunk for you and your husband when I read this. I’m so sorry and I’m sending every positive vibe your way. And you are right all your energy and focus now has to be on Chris’s treatment and recovery. And make time for yourself too as that is important for you both too. Huge hugs.

  4. Aw, man- fuck cancer! I hope it hasn’t spread, and that they can easily treat and kill it forever and ever. Also, that you don’t have to move again (ugh!). I can’t imagine how emotionally draining this all is, and I’m glad you’re taking a break from blogging as well with it. We can wait 4 months to hear what the next steps are!

  5. Kelley, I wish you and your husband well, naturally you’re making priorities and focusing on health and personal life! I really enjoyed reading your blog and will definitely be waiting if you decide to re-start it but if not, it’s been an awesome journey, no? :)
Stay strong and positive if at all possible and know we’re all thinking of you.
